General

What is the difference between a mid-drive motor and a hub drive motor?

The general difference between a mid-drive and a hub drive motor is of course its location on your bicycle.

A mid-drive motor lives in the bottom bracket area of your bicycle. In other words, it’s basically in the middle of your bike. Your crank arms attach directly to the motor. Mid-drive motors tend to be more consistent and have a more natural pedaling feel, though they are also more expensive and complex.

A hub motor takes the place of your front or rear wheel’s hub. That means the wheel is built around the hub motor. Hub motors are much less expensive, but also generally less sophisticated, than mid-drive systems. While mid-drive motors require a special frame design to accommodate them, hub drive motors can generally be used with any frame design.

Which is better: a hub motor or a mid-drive motor?

Both the hub drive system and mid-drive system offer distinct benefits and drawbacks, so it’s best to approach the question from a cost-versus-performance perspective.

While it’s generally less sophisticated, a hub drive system offers simplicity, lower cost, and enough pedal-assist power for commuting, and even off-road applications.… But if you’re after more performance and better handling, look for a mid-drive system.
